Erica Tyler

Principal Consultant

With over 25 years of experience in technology, including 18 years specializing in Operational Technology and cybersecurity within the gas and electric utility sector, Ms. Tyler brings a wealth of expertise to her role at NST. She has an extensive skill set, covering the development and maintenance of transmission and distribution management systems, project management, vulnerability management, security awareness and training, and all aspects of NERC CIP compliance. Ms. Tyler has also led critical initiatives that significantly improved cybersecurity protocols and ensured compliance with industry standards.

Ms. Tyler joined NST in 2024 after transitioning from a long-standing client relationship, where she collaborated on various engagements addressing the NERC CIP Standards, including audit preparations, gap assessments, and vulnerability assessments. NST was also engaged for non-CIP specialized cybersecurity engagements.

Earlier in Career

Before joining NST, Ms. Tyler spent 22 years with an electric transmission owner / operator, where she served as Director of Operational Technology and Cybersecurity. In this role, she played a pivotal part in NERC CIP Compliance, acting as CIP Senior Manager after serving as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) for the technical standards, and co-SME for the non-technical and physical security standards for many years. Ms. Tyler also developed and enforced internal non-CIP standards for security for gas distribution infrastructure and grid modernization initiatives. Throughout her tenure, she also successfully managed major projects, including the EMS and DMS systems, internal communications initiatives, and cybersecurity programs for both IT and OT, solidifying her reputation as a leader in the industry.

Ms. Tyler went on to serve as Global Head of Operational Technology at another electric transmission owner / operator, where she spearheaded the deployment of Intrusion Detection Systems to network-connected substations across the US and overseas. She also provided NERC CIP guidance for the company’s first US 61850 substation, effectively preventing potential violations and enhancing the organization's security posture.

Education

Ms. Tyler holds a Master of Science in Computer Information Systems with a focus on Security from Boston University, an MBA from Clarkson University, and a Bachelor of Science in Information Systems from Marist College. She is a Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) and holds a Chief Information Security Officer certification from NYU’s Tandon School of Engineering.
